Prince of Denmark Heads Cast of Volvo Masters Drama

01/11/08

At the end of the rain-delayed second round of the Volvo Masters, overnight leader Søren Kjeldsen of Denmark leads the way by two shots over a trio of players on four-under-par but with 13 golfers on level par or better, the 21st and final Volvo Masters is very much up for grabs.

At the halfway mark of the rain-delayed Volvo masters at Valderrama, the ‘Prince of Denmark’ Søren Kjeldsen retained his first round lead, two shots ahead of Spanish favourite Sergio García and Englishmen Anthony Wall and Lee Westwood.

Frenchman Thomas Level is s shot further back on three-under-par with last year’s joint runner-up Simon Dyson and 1997 Volvo Masters champion Darren Clarke both on two-under.

At least the rain held-off for the majority of the second round players and Kjeldsen, who consolidated his position with a level-par 71 said, “Not as good as the first round but under the circumstances, I’ll take that.”

Meanwhile, García, who has three second-places already at the Volvo Masters carded a one-under-par 70, which had looked better until a bogey six on the 17th as the flamboyant Spaniard dumped his second shot in the lake in front of the green.

“I went for it,” explained the winner of the penultimate event on the 2008 European Tour season, adding, “If I wouldn’t have gone for it, I would have felt bad.”

But the man with most to gain from a Volvo Masters victory would be Englishman Lee Westwood, the 1998 champion would be in line for his second Order of Merit title, especially with rivals Robert Karlsson and Padraig Harrington seemingly out of contention.
